The Transmission and Preservation of Buddhism — A Century in Hong Kong” Episode 7: “Cultivating Merit — Lay Practitioners Who Hold Up Half the Sky. |
|
Hong Kong’s century-long Buddhist tradition has been shaped not only by monastics but also by devoted lay practitioners. This episode highlights these unsung supporters, showing how, guided by bodhicitta, they sustained the Dharma through times of change—raising funds, advancing education, relieving suffering, and upholding the Three Jewels. |

2026 Ching Ming Dharma Assembly — Dharma Teaching |
|
Emperor Leung, wishing to dedicate merit to his consort Lady Ci, invited Bou Chi Chan Master to guide the practice of repentance, compiling the Compassionate Repentance Liturgy based on the scriptures. Maitreya Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva of Compassion) symbolizes boundless compassion and the aspiration to benefit all beings. The liturgy is arranged in ten scrolls:
Scroll One teaches refuge, resolving doubt, and repentance—encouraging self-reflection, remorse, and true correction, not repeating past wrongs.
Scroll Two focuses on arousing the Bodhi mind, making vows, and dedicating merit for the welfare of all beings. Scrolls Three and Four explain karmic retribution, clarifying the causes behind suffering and obstacles.
Scrolls Five and Six emphasize resolving grievances—with family and all sentient beings—through repentance and dedication. Affinity or aversion in daily life may stem from karmic ties; through practice, one transforms resentment into goodwill, showing the importance of a single thought. The seven-day assembly centers on repentance and dedication for karmic ties of past and present lives.
Scroll Seven expresses gratitude for encountering the Dharma, while Scrolls Eight to Ten extend repentance to all beings in the six realms. Practitioners are encouraged to follow the text with contemplation and engage sincerely in inner transformation. |
