Public Lecture: Buddhist Spiritual Care for People Living with Dementia |
|
Despite the extensive literature on dementia care, there has been an absence of research on dementia care from a Buddhist perspective. What appears to be largely missing from this discourse is the potential of incorporating traditional Buddhist beliefs and practices as part of a comprehensive approach to contemplative, spiritual caregiving for people living with dementia. Contemplative care informed by Buddhist ethics, beliefs, and practices is an approach that deserves further exploration.
Date & Time: October 24, 2026 (SAT) 3 to 4:30 pm PCT.

Book Talk: Revisiting the Heart Sūtra |
|
This monograph offers a groundbreaking re-examination of one of the most significant Buddhist scriptures. Through meticulous comparison of Sanskrit texts and their Chinese and Tibetan translations, Dr. Shiu investigates longstanding debates around the Heart Sūtra’s origins—considering whether it may be a Chinese apocryphon—and situates it within the wider Perfection of Wisdom tradition. His work bridges Chinese, Indian, and Tibetan Buddhist scholarship, offering a fresh, revisionist interpretation that illuminates the Heart Sūtra’s historical development, ritual functions, and philosophical depth.

Mutual Causality in Buddhism and General Systems Theory |
Author: Joanna Macy
Language: English
📍 Available at the Society Online Library
🪷 Book Introduction
The book brings important new dimensions to the interface between contemporary Western science and ancient Eastern wisdom. Here for the first time the concepts and insights of general systems theory are presented in tandem with those of the Buddha. Remarkable convergences appear between core Buddhist teachings and the systems view of reality, arising in our century from biology and extending into the social and cognitive sciences. Giving a cogent introduction to both bodies of thought, and a fresh interpretation of the Buddha's core teaching of dependent co-arising, this book shows how their common perspective on causality can inform our lives. The interdependence of all beings provides the context for clarifying both the role of meditative practice and guidelines for effective action on behalf of the common good.
📌 We warmly invite you to explore this title in the Society Online Library. |

Ullambana Offering Dharma Assembly in the Bingwu Year — Dharma Teaching by Abbot Tsang Chit |
|
On the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, known as Buddha’s Joyful Day, Tung Lin Kok Yuen held its Ullambana Offering Dharma Assembly.
In his Dharma teaching, Abbot Tsang Chit explored the differences between Buddhist teachings and traditional folk beliefs surrounding the seventh lunar month. Rather than fear or taboo, Buddhism encourages us to reflect on karma, causes and conditions, and how we can cherish wholesome connections and transform difficult ones.
How can we understand the Buddha’s compassionate teaching of filial gratitude, repaying our parents’ kindness, relieving suffering, and bringing happiness to others?
We invite you to watch the Dharma teaching and discover the wisdom behind the Ullambana tradition. |

Imagine UBC |
|
Our volunteers spent a sunny day at UBC, connecting with students and sharing little souvenirs with meaningful stories behind them.
From postcards and dolls to bookmarks and scented pieces, each item carries its own symbolism and a glimpse into Buddhist culture. We also had the opportunity to chat with students who were curious about meditation and the meaning behind the names of different Bodhisattvas.
Between games, conversations, and laughter, we made new connections and wonderful memories.
Grateful for this beautiful day!

Sowing seeds in your mind |
|
As the summer heat fades, the “Sowing seed in your mind” programme approaches its final sessions.
In the Ploughing the Field Sutta of the Saṃyukta Āgama, the Buddha uses farming as a metaphor for spiritual cultivation: faith is the seed, wisdom the plough, mindfulness the reins, and diligence the ox.
With steadfast practice, we cultivate the mind and move towards liberation. Inspired by the Buddha’s teaching, the Brahmin developed deep faith, renounced worldly life, and attained arahantship. |

Buddha’s Open-day Volunteer Gathering |
|
The 2026 Buddha’s Birthday Open Day was successfully concluded. To express our gratitude, the Abbot, Dharma Masters, and volunteer bodhisattvas gathered together to relax, share a meal, and celebrate the fruits of their collective efforts.
We are deeply grateful to all volunteers for their selfless dedication and compassionate service in supporting the Buddha’s Birthday celebration and benefiting others.
As the Lotus Sutra says, “With compassionate eyes, the Buddha regards all sentient beings; the accumulation of blessings is boundless as the ocean.” May their kindness continue to nurture wholesome connections and bring blessings and wisdom to all.

Monthly Meditation |
|
“Where the mind is pure, the Buddha-land is pure.” — Vimalakīrti Nirdeśa Sūtra
A pure mind, free from attachment and grounded in compassion and equanimity, transforms how we experience the world. True practice begins with awakening and purifying the mind.
In August, Dharma Ven. Chuan Wai led our Monthly Chan & Pure Land Practice through prostrations, meditation, walking meditation, and tea meditation, offering participants a quiet space to settle the mind and cultivate inner clarity. |
