Public Lecture: Buddhist Spiritual Care for People Living with Dementia |
|
Despite the extensive literature on dementia care, there has been an absence of research on dementia care from a Buddhist perspective. What appears to be largely missing from this discourse is the potential of incorporating traditional Buddhist beliefs and practices as part of a comprehensive approach to contemplative, spiritual caregiving for people living with dementia. Contemplative care informed by Buddhist ethics, beliefs, and practices is an approach that deserves further exploration.

Book Talk: Revisiting the Heart Sūtra |
|
This monograph offers a groundbreaking re-examination of one of the most significant Buddhist scriptures. Through meticulous comparison of Sanskrit texts and their Chinese and Tibetan translations, Dr. Shiu investigates longstanding debates around the Heart Sūtra’s origins—considering whether it may be a Chinese apocryphon—and situates it within the wider Perfection of Wisdom tradition. His work bridges Chinese, Indian, and Tibetan Buddhist scholarship, offering a fresh, revisionist interpretation that illuminates the Heart Sūtra’s historical development, ritual functions, and philosophical depth.
Date & Time: October 23, 2026 (SAT) 5:30 to 7:30 pm PCT.

Satipatthana: The Direct Path to Realization |
Author: Ven. Analayo
Language: English
📍 Available at the Society
🪷 Volunteer Sharing
If you are someone who loves scholarly analysis of the Pali suttas book for you. Ven. Analayo’s Satipatthana: The Direct Path to Realization is a lucid and authoritative textual examination of this core discourse. This book is an academic doctoral dissertation, but because it is so clearly written, many serious meditators will find it highly informative, a pleasure to read, and inspiring.
Surely in Theravada Buddhism, if not in all Buddhist traditions, the Satipatthana Sutta, the discourse on mindfulness, is a foundation of doctrine. In this early, concise discourse, the Buddha lays out what many believe is the essence of the path to freedom—mindfulness meditation.
The Satipatthana Sutta divides the realm of meditative experience into four sections, or satipatthanas: mindfulness of the body, of feelings, of mental experience, and of the dhammas. And because within these four sections the sutta covers all of the core doctrine of early Buddhism. The author first places the Buddha’s teaching within the context of preexisting approaches to knowledge prevalent in ancient India. Then he delves into the underlying meanings of fundamental concepts central to the sutta. Drawing on the Pali discourses and commentaries, he presents the imagery, similes and variety of usage of terms such as sati (mindfulness), samadhi (concentration), sampajana (clearly knowing) and atapi (diligence, effort).

UBC Imagine Day |
|
Our volunteers spent a sunny day at UBC, connecting with students and sharing little souvenirs with meaningful stories behind them.
From postcards and dolls to bookmarks and scented pieces, each item carries its own symbolism and a glimpse into Buddhist culture. We also had the opportunity to chat with students who were curious about meditation and the meaning behind the names of different Bodhisattvas.
Between games, conversations, and laughter, we made new connections and wonderful memories.
Grateful for this beautiful day! |
